Educational and Research Purposes

With focus on "Modernization of Asia" and "Revival of Asian Traditional Norms" as its approaches to take for viewing Asia of the 21st century, the Asian Area Studies Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Asian Area Studies aims to develop individuals who deepen an understanding of and an insight into problems common to Asian regions, learn a profound scholarly knowledge of Asian area studies, and acquire research capabilities based on a broad global perspective or high-level vocational skills.

Diploma Policy (Principle of Degree Conferment)

For the Asian Area Studies Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Asian Area Studies, students who have completed the required number of credits and whose submitted master's theses have been examined and found acceptable for the degree in accordance with the internal rules related to the program are judged to be equipped with the following capabilities and awarded a master's degree (Asian Area Studies).

  1. Capability to acquire a scholarly knowledge of Asian area studies.
  2. Capability to acquire a keen awareness of the problems regarding the modernization of Asia and the revival of Asian traditional norms.
  3. Capability to acquire research capabilities based on a broad global perspective.
  4. Capability to acquire high-level vocational skills supported by a sense of mission and a sense of responsibility as a member of a global society.

Curriculum Policy (Principle of Curriculum Formation and Implementation)

The Asian Area Studies Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Asian Area Studies implements specialized education related to Asia area studies. To develop individuals who have research capabilities based on a broad global perspective or high-level vocational skills, a curriculum with the following characteristics is formed and provided.

  1. The Asian Area Studies Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Asian Area Studies implements specialized education related to Asia area studies. To develop individuals who have research capabilities based on a broad global perspective or high-level vocational skills, a curriculum with the following characteristics is formed and provided.
  2. Program courses are provided with seminar courses so that under the supervision of instructing staff assigned according to the research themes of individual students, students can improve the research capabilities related to their specialized fields, and eventually prepare theses.
  3. Program courses are provided with two lecture courses per major (12 lecture courses in total) so that students can deepen their scholarly knowledge related to fields adjacent to their selected majors and acquire wide interdisciplinary knowledge.
  4. Related courses such as an area survey methodology are provided so that students can acquire high-level research methods, such as fieldwork.
  5. Implementing overseas study or field work in research target regions is encouraged so that students can collect information absolutely required for empirical research on the relevant regions, and at the same time, deepen an insight based on a global perspective.

Admission Policy (Principle of Student Admission)

Based on the Diploma Policy and Curriculum Policy, the Asian Area Studies Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Asian Area Studies seeks applicants who have the following academic skills and motivations.

  1. Those who have basic academic skills adequate for learning Asian area studies.
  2. Those who have language proficiency necessary for learning Asian area studies.
  3. Those who have a keen awareness of the problems regarding the modernization of Asia and the revival of Asian traditional norms and aim to acquire research capabilities based on a broad global perspective.
  4. Those who aim to acquire high-level vocational skills helpful in contributing to international cooperation and international exchange as a member of a global society.

Doctor's Program, Graduate School of Asian Area Studies

Educational and Research Purposes

Based on the two viewpoints in the master's program "The Modernization of Asia" and "The Revival of Traditional Society in Asia" the Asian Area Studies Doctor's Program offered by the Graduate School of Asian Area Studies aims to develop individuals who can actively work globally as a specialist in Asian area studies with a broad and profound scholarly knowledge of Asian area studies, high-level expertise and practical skills that can be globally recognized, and high-level research capabilities and vocational skills.

  4. Capability to acquire high-level expertise and practical skills helpful in actively working in Asia and vocational skills that can be recognized globally.

Curriculum Policy (Principle of Curriculum Formation and Implementation)

To develop individuals who can learn a broad and profound scholarly knowledge of Asia area studies, gain a global recognition as a specialist in Asia area studies, and actively work globally, the Asian Area Studies Doctor's Program offered by the Graduate School of Asian Area Studies forms and provides a curriculum with the following characteristics.

  1. For program courses, with emphasis placed on disciplines, academic discipline systems are categorized into social sciences and human sciences. These categories are further divided into six majors, namely political study, economic study, and social study for the former category, and historical study, cultural study, and artistic study for the latter category, allowing students to empirically study a group of problems common to Asia.
  2. Program courses mainly consist of seminar courses so that under the supervision of instructing staff assigned according to the research themes of individual students, students can improve the research capabilities related to their specialized fields, and empirically study a group of problems common to Asia.
  3. Under the supervision of instructing staff, students work on creating a research paper, and eventually prepare a doctor's thesis at a level that can be recognized globally.
  4. Courses for acquiring a scholarly knowledge of fields adjacent to each major and high-level research methods are provided so that students can deepen an interdisciplinary insight and improve their research capabilities.
  5. Though participation in such activities as fieldwork, overseas study, and joint research projects for research target regions, students are encouraged to promote highly-specialized and practical research related to the relevant regions.
