Graduate School of Asian Area Studies in the Graduate Schools of Daito Bunka University Thesis Examination Criteria

Master's Program

  1. The thesis demonstrates the student's ability to understand and clarify problems in the relevant Asian region based on an adequate knowledge of the language, culture, society, and so on of the said region.
  2. The thesis shows that the student set a unique research theme and created the thesis with a clear awareness of the problem.
  3. The thesis shows that the student sufficiently examined earlier research related to the relevant research theme, and appropriately evaluated the significance and issues earlier research has.
  4. The thesis demonstrates the student's deep insight into the modernization of Asia and the revival of Asian traditional norms and the consistency and clarity of the argument.
  5. The thesis shows that the student adopted appropriate research methods to pursue a research theme related to the modernization of Asia or the revival of Asian traditional norms, and collected data through surveys, such as fieldwork.
  6. The thesis shows that the discussion was made based on the results obtained after specifically analyzing and verifying collected data, bringing new knowledge into Asian area studies.
  7. The thesis shows that the argument was made based on an appropriate style conforming to a procedure for creating an academic paper, by creating and presenting a list of literature, figures, tables, materials, and so on.

Doctor's Program

  1. The thesis demonstrates the student's stock of information adequate for making clear problems in the relevant Asian region based on a highly-specialized knowledge of the said region, and for giving the results of research back to the academic circle and society.
  2. The thesis was created by setting a unique academically and socially significant theme and is based on that significance.
  3. The thesis shows that the student thoroughly and systematically examined earlier research related to the relevant research theme, and appropriately evaluated the significance and limitations earlier research has.
  4. The thesis demonstrates the student's specialized deep insight into the modernization of Asia and the revival of Asian traditional norms and the consistency and clarity of the argument.
  5. The thesis shows that the student collected original data through his or her own literature search and fact-finding work including fieldwork to pursue a research theme related to the modernization of Asia or the revival of Asian traditional norms.
  6. The thesis shows that the discussion was made based on the results obtained after specifically analyzing and verifying collected data, bringing new knowledge into Asian area studies and making high-level academic and social contribution.
  7. The thesis shows that the argument was made based on an appropriate style conforming to a procedure for creating an academic paper, by creating and presenting a list of literature, figures, tables, materials, and so on.

By-law
This by-law was established based on the approval of a majority in the Graduate School Committee and was applicable with effect from June 17, 2014.
