Mission and Motto
By providing education and research on Eastern cultures,particularly Chinese studies, Daito Bunka University aims at contributing to the promotion of this field, ensuring the establishment of moral principles based on Confucianism,absorbing elements of Western culture while maintaining its foundations in Eastern culture, and achieving a fusion of Eastern and Western approaches to create a new, open culture that is open to the international community.
Educational Philosophy
In accordance with its aims, Daito Bunka University conducts research and provides education in various disciplines related to the cultures of the world, with a particular focus on Eastern culture. The university also strives to promote greater understanding of those cultures, and works to shape students of character who respect the unique aspects of Eastern cultures and appreciate the region’s traditional arts and virtues. At the same time, the university strives to nurture promising students who have an international worldview so they can contribute
to the development of global culture and the realization of human happiness.
University History
| 1921 | The 44th Diet passed the Proposal for Chinese Studies Promotion. |
| 1923 | The Daito Bunka Association was established,and Daito Bunka Gakuin was established in Kudan. |
| 1941 | The campus moved from Kudan to Ikebukuro. |
| 1949 | Daito Bunka Gakuin became a university under the new educational system,and was renamed Tokyo Bunsei Daigaku (consisting of a Faculty of Literature and Politics). |
| 1951 | The corporate and school names were changed to Bunsei Daigaku. |
| 1953 | The school name was changed to Daito Bunka University. |
| 1960 | The corporate name was changed to Daito Bunka Gakuen Educational Foundation. The Daito Judo Seifuku School (now the Daito Academy of Medical Technology) was established. |
| 1961 | The campus moved from Ikebukuro to Itabashi. |
| 1962 | The Faculty of Literature and Politics was reorganized into the Faculty of Literature (comprised of the Department of Japanese Literature and the Department of Chinese Literature) and the Faculty of Economics (Department of Economics). Daito Bunka University Dai-ichi High School was established. |
| 1963 | The Department of Business Administration was added to the Faculty of Economics. |
| 1964 | The Graduate School of Literature (with master’s programs inJapanese Literature and Chinese Literature) was established. |
| 1967 | The Daito Bunka University Higashimatsuyama Campus opened and the Department of English and American Literature was added to the Faculty of Literature. |
| 1968 | The Department of Foreign Languages was added to the Faculty of Literature. |
| 1972 | The Daito Bunka University Aogiri Kindergarten was established. The Department of Education was added to the Faculty of Literature, and the Faculty of Foreign Languages (comprised of the Department of Chinese and the Department of English) was established. The Graduate School of Economics (master’s program in Economics) was established. |
| 1973 | The Faculty of Law (Department of Law) was established. |
| 1977 | The Graduate School of Law was established (master’s program in Law). |
| 1978 | The Postgraduate Advanced Course was established in Literature and Economics. A master’s program in English Literature was added to the Graduate School of Literature, and the Japanese Language Program for International Students was established. Language Program for International Students was established. |
| 1986 | The Faculty of International Relations (comprised of the Department of International Relations and the Department of International Cultures) was established. |
| 1990 | The Department of Political Science was added to the Faculty of Law. |
| 1993 | The Department of Japanese was added to the Faculty of Foreign Languages, and the Graduate School of Economics (master’s program in Economics) was established. |
| 1994 | A master’s program in Political Science was added to the Graduate School of Law. |
| 1999 | The Graduate School of Foreign Languages (master’s programs in Chinese, English, and Japanese) was established, and the Graduate School of Asian Area Studies (master’s program in Asian Area Studies) was established. |
| 2000 | The Department of Calligraphy was added to the Faculty of Literature. The Department of Business Administration in the Faculty of Economics was upgraded to the Faculty of Business Administration, comprised of the Department of Business Management and the Department of Business Studies and Informatics. |
| 2001 | The Faculty of Social-Human Environmentology, comprised of the Department of Social-Human Environmentology, was established. The Faculty of Economics was reorganized to comprise the Department of Socio-economics and the Department of Modern Economics. |
| 2003 | The Graduate School of Business Administration (master’s program in Business Administration) was established, and a master’s program in Calligraphy was added to the Graduate School of Literature. |
| 2004 | The Law School (Juris Doctor’s Program) was established in the JR Shinanomachi Bldg. |
| 2005 | The name of the Department of Chinese Literature in the Faculty of Literature was changed to the Department of Sinology. The Faculty of Sports & Health Science was established (comprised of the Department of Sports Science and the Department of Health Science). |
| 2008 | The master’s program in Education was added to the Graduate School of Literature. The school celebrated its 85th anniversary on September 20. |
| 2009 | The Graduate School of Sports and Health Sciences (master’s program in Sports and Health Science) was established. |
