Chronology

Looking at the centennial history of Daito Bunka

Teachings and spirits link people with their forefathers as life connects children with their parents. The signs of each period have blended with things that change and things that never change, causing us to evolve every day. The more than 95-year history of Daito Bunka is also a history of the thoughts of many people. Taking the thoughts of our forefathers into the future, we will continue to evolve.

  • 1921
    March:
    A proposition regarding the promotion of the study of the Chinese classics was submitted to the 44th session of the pre-war House of Representatives. It was approved but not implemented.
  • 1922
    March:
    A proposition regarding the promotion of the study of the Chinese classics was resubmitted to the 45th session of the pre-war House of Representatives. It was approved but not implemented.
  • 1923
    February:
    The Daito Bunka Association was established.
    March:
    A proposition regarding the promotion of the study of the Chinese classics was submitted to the 46th session of the pre-war House of Representatives for the third time. The House decided to disburse subsidies to the Daito Bunka Association (1,750,000 yen over 10-years).
    September 20:
    The Daito Bunka Association and Daito Bunka Gakuin (regular and advanced courses) were approved.
    November:
    A school was opened at 6-16 Fujimicho, Kojimachi-ku (Kudan Campus).

    January:
    First enrollment ceremony for Daito Bunka Gakuin

  • 1932
    October:
    Commemorative ceremony for the 10th anniversary (at Nippon Seinen-Kan Hall)
  • 1938
    February:
    The regular course was reorganized into three sections: an ethics and Chinese classics course, a Japanese and Chinese classics course, and an East Asian politics and economics course.
  • 1941
    February:
    Daito Bunka Gakuin moved from the Kudan campus to 3-1385 Ikebukuro, Toshima-ku (Ikebukuro campus).
  • 1944
    March:
    School name changed to Daito Bunka Gakuin Senmon Gakko (Daito Bunka Gakuin Vocational School)
  • 1945
    April:
    The Ikebukuro Campus was destroyed towards the end of the war. (The school moved temporarily to President Sakai’s residence.)
  • 1946
    February:
    The school moved to 4 Aotocho, Katsushika-ku (Aoto Campus).
  • 1949
    April:
    Tokyo Bunsei University was approved under the new post-war educational system.
    May:
    Corporation name changed to Toho Bunka Association.
    June:
    Enrollment ceremony for Tokyo Bunsei University.
    October:
    The school moved from the Aoto campus back to the site of the former Ikebukuro Campus (new Ikebukuro campus). The establishment of Tokyo Bunsei Gakuin as a miscellaneous vocational school was approved.
  • 1951
    February:
    The Corporation name and university name changed to Bunsei University.
  • 1953
    April:
    The Corporation name and university name changed to Daito Bunka University.
  • 1954
    April:
    Chuo Judo and Physiotherapist Training Institute opened.
  • 1955
    April:
    The Faculty of Literature and Politics (with departments of Japanese literature, Chinese literature, and Political Economics) was established.
  • 1956
    October:
    The Establishment of Bunsei Kindergarten was approved.
  • 1960
    June:
    The Corporation name changed to Daito Bunka Gakuen Educational Foundation.
    September:
    Chuo Judo and Physiotherapist Training Institute was reorganized, and the establishment of Daito Judo and Physiotherapy Vocational School was approved.
  • 1961
    April:
    Daito Judo and Physiotherapy Vocational School changed its name and reopened as Daito Medical Technology and Rehabilitation Vocational School (consisting of the Judo Rehabilitation Course and the Hygiene Inspection Course). Also, the Institute for Oriental Studies opened.
    August:
    The school moved from the Ikebukuro Campus to 1902 Shimura Nishidaimachi, Itabashi-ku (the current Takashimadaira Itabashi Campus). Discontinuation of Tokyo Bunsei Gakuin (vocational school) was approved.
  • 1962
    April:
    The Faculty of Literature and Politics was reorganized to establish the Department of Japanese Literature and the Department of Chinese Literature in the Faculty of Literature and the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Economics. Daito Bunka University Dai-ichi High School opened.
  • 1963
    April:
    The Department of Business Administration in the Faculty of Economics opened. Discontinuation of Bunsei Kindergarten was approved.
  • 1964
    April:
    The Graduate School of Literature opened with a Master’s program.
  • 1967
    April:
    The Department of Liberal Arts moved to the new school campus established at 560 Iwadono Nagasaka, Higashi Matsuyama, Saitama Prefecture (the current Higashi Matsuyama Campus). The Department of English and American Literature in the Faculty of Literature and the Graduate School of Literature (a doctoral program) opened. Daito Medical Technology and Seifuku Vocational School changed its name to Daito Medical Technology and Rehabilitation Vocational School.
  • 1968
    April:
    The Department of Foreign Languages in the Faculty of Literature opened.
  • 1969
    April:
    The Calligraphy Culture Center opened.
  • 1971
    December:
    The Hygiene Inspection Course in Daito Medical Technology Vocational School changed its name to the Clinical Test Course.
  • 1972
    April:
    The Department of Foreign Languages in the Faculty of Literature was reorganized to establish the Department of Chinese and the Department of English in the Faculty of Foreign Languages. The Department of Education in the Faculty of Literature opened. The Graduate School of Economics opened with a Master’s program. Aogiri Kindergarten affiliated with Daito Bunka University opened. As a result of a merger with the Eishin Gakuen Educational Foundation, Eishin Senior High School, Eishin Junior High School, Eishin Elementary School, and Eishin Kindergarten opened as affiliated institutions with Daito Bunka University.
  • 1973
    April:
    The Department of Law in the Faculty of Law opened.
    October:
    The 50th Anniversary Memorial Hall was completed at the Itabashi Campus.
  • 1974
    April:
    Eishin Kindergarten affiliated with Daito Bunka University was reorganized to establish Dai-ni Aogiri Kindergarten affiliated with Daito Bunka University.
  • 1975
    April:
    Dai-ni Aogiri Kindergarten affiliated with Daito Bunka University changed its name to Eishin Kindergarten affiliated with Daito Bunka University.
  • 1976
    December:
    Daito Bunka Hall opened.
  • 1977
    April:
    The Graduate School of Law opened with a Master’s program.
    July:
    Eishin Senior High School, Eishin Junior High School, Eishin Elementary School, and Eishin Kindergarten were separated from Daito Bunka University and transferred to the Eishin Gakuen Educational Foundation.
  • 1978
    April:
    The Graduate School of Economics inaugurated a doctoral program. The Japanese Language Program for International Students opened. The Faculty of Literature and Politics was reorganized to establish the Faculty of Literature and the Faculty of Economics.
  • 1985
    April:
    The Judo Rehabilitation Course at Daito Medical Technology Vocational School switched from a two-year system to a three-year system.
  • 1986
    April:
    The Department of International Relations and the Department of International Cultures in the Faculty of International Relations opened.
  • 1988
    April:
    The Calligraphy Culture Center was reorganized to establish the Institute for Calligraphy.
  • 1990
    April:
    The Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Law opened.
  • 1991
    April:
    The Graduate School of Law opened a doctoral program.
  • 1993
    April:
    The Department of Japanese in the Faculty of Foreign Languages opened. The Japanese Language Program for International Students moved to the Higashi Matsuyama Campus.
  • 1995
    April:
    Daito Bunka University Dai-ichi High School changed its status from an all-boys school to a coeducational school.
  • 1999
    April:
    The Graduate School of Foreign Languages and the Graduate School of Asian Area Studies both opened a Master’s program.
  • 2000
    April:
    The Department of Business Management and the Department of Business Studies and Informatics in the Faculty of Business Administration, as well as the Department of Calligraphy in the Faculty of Literature opened.
  • 2001
    April:
    The Department of Economics in the Faculty of Economics was reorganized to establish the Department of Socio-economics and the Department of Modern Economics. The Department of Social-Human Environmentology in the Faculty of Social-Human Environmentology opened. A doctoral program was established in the Graduate School of Asian Area Studies.
  • 2003
    April:
    The Graduate School of Business Administration opened a doctoral program.
  • 2004
    April:
    The Daito Bunka Law School opened in Shinjuku-ku, at the new Shinanomachi Campus.
  • 2005
    April:
    The Department of Sports Science and the Department of Health Science in the Faculty of Sports & Health Science opened. The Department of Chinese Literature in the Faculty of Literature was reorganized to establish the Department of Sinology. The Graduate School of Foreign Languages inaugurated a doctoral program.
  • 2006
    April:
    The Daito Archives opened. The Daito Bunka University Beatrix Potter Reference Library opened (in the Saitama Children’s Zoo, near the Higashi-Matsuyama Campus).
  • 2007
    March:
    The Clinical Test Course in Daito Medical Technology Vocational School closed.
    April:
    The Daytime Judo Seifuku Course in Daito Medical Technology Vocational School opened.
  • 2008
    March:
    The Japanese Language Program for International Students was discontinued.
  • 2009
    April:
    The Graduate School of Health and Sports Science opened a Master’s program.
  • 2012
    March:
    The Judo Rehabilitation Course at Daito Medical Technology Vocational School closed.
    April:
    Student registration for majors in Japanese literature, Chinese literature, and economics was suspended.
  • 2013
    April:
    Student registration for a major in education was suspended.
    September:
    Commemorative ceremony for the 90th anniversary of Daito Bunka Gakuen
  • 2015
    April:
    Student registration for Daito Bunka Law School was suspended.
  • 2016
    April:
    Student registration for the Department of Business Studies and Informatics in the Faculty of Business Administration was suspended. The Faculty of Business Administration was reorganized. From then on, it only contained the Department of Business Management.
  • 2017
    April:
    The Department of Sinology in the Faculty of Literature was renamed the Department of Chinese Literature.
    The Faculty of Literature (majors in Japanese literature, Chinese literature, and education) and the Faculty of Economics (major in economics) closed.
  • 2018
    April:
    The Department of History and Culture in the Faculty of Literature, the Department of Nursing Science in the Faculty of Sports and Health Science, and the Faculty of Sociology (the Department of Sociology) were established.
    Student registration for the Faculty of Social-Human Environmentology was suspended.
