Mission of Education and Research and Basic Policies (Three Policies)

Master's Program, Graduate School of Economics

Educational and Research Purposes

The Economics Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Economics aims to conduct high-level education and research for understanding economic theories and economic phenomena and to develop individuals who have wide and rich scholarly knowledge and high-level research, thinking, and expressive capabilities and who can implement education and research activities in their specialized field and other high-level-expertise-required jobs.

Diploma Policy (Principle of Degree Conferment)

For the Economics Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Economics, students who have completed the required number of credits and whose submitted theses have been examined and found acceptable for the degree in accordance with the thesis examination criteria are judged to be equipped with the capabilities below and awarded a master's degree (Economics). However, for the Special Public Policy Studies Program, students who have completed the required number of credits and whose submitted theses have been examined and found acceptable for the degree in accordance with the thesis examination criteria are awarded either a master's degree (Economics) or a master's degree (Public Policy Studies). And students who have completed the required number of credits and whose submitted research papers have been examined and found acceptable for the degree in accordance with the research paper examination and evaluation criteria in the thesis examination criteria are awarded a master's degree (Public Policy Studies).

  1. Capability to understand economic theories, histories, and policies, and analyze and consider the Japanese economy and the global economy with abundant creativity.
  2. Capabilities and expert knowledge necessary for high-level expert professionals and researchers.
  3. Practical capabilities and knowledge in the specialized field necessary for taking responsibility in global business.
  4. Language ability, and practical capabilities and knowledge in the special field necessary for working as an interpreter in a global society.
  5. Capabilities and expert knowledge necessary for working as a specialist in a public organization within or outside Japan.

Curriculum Policy (Principle of Curriculum Formation and Implementation)

For the Economics Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Economics, we have placed emphasis on developing researchers in such fields or frameworks as economic theories, economic histories, and economic policies to date. However, we are now concentrating our efforts on developing not only researchers but also individuals who shoulder the society of the 21st century to respond to the needs of society for developing high-level expert professionals. Therefore, to respond to the globalization of economic society, the curriculum policy below is set for this curriculum in consideration of the development of the following individuals: researchers studying problems in both the Japanese economy and the global economy, high-level expert professionals engaged in work such as international business, economic cooperation, and economic development, and high-level professionals capable of governance implementation or public decision making in a global perspective in administrative or public organizations including municipalities.

  1. To implement full graduate school education that can respond to various needs of modern society and to support students in their career path selection and research subject study, the curriculum is formed by arranging the following courses so that in each course, students can acquire adequate knowledge and skills to implement research: lecture, practice, and research guidance courses covering the entire field of economics; introductory courses provided by considering students not from economics-related departments or faculties; "Interpreting Studies" and its related courses; courses related to the Special Public Policy Studies Program; and research guidance for students aiming to obtain certification as a tax accountant and its related courses.
  2. Besides theoretical courses and economic history courses, applied courses such as finance, public finance, and international finance, and practical courses represented by "Interpreting Practicum" are arranged to form a well-balanced curriculum.
  3. Instructing professors responsible for research guidance provide guidance on creating a master's thesis. Before a master's degree thesis is completed, two open interim presentations are made with participation of teaching staff giving lectures in the Graduate School of Economics as well as the instructing professor in charge to confirm the progress of a thesis and point out problems so that strict thesis guidance and evaluation can be provided. By providing courses such as "Foreign Economic Literature" and "Documents Search and Study," besides guidance by instructing professors, a structure for supporting students in their thesis creating and research activities is constructed to develop writing ability, expressive skills, dissemination skills, and so on through careful and high-level education and guidance.
  4. An opportunity is given for students to gain experience and improve their education ability as educators by working as TA (teaching assistant).

Admission Policy (Principle of Student Admission)

Based on the Diploma Policy and Curriculum Policy, the Economics Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Literature seeks applicants who have the following academic skills and motivations.

  1. Those who have basic academic skills and a spirit of inquiry adequate for learning economics and its related areas.
  2. Those who wish to study economic phenomena and problems arising in the Japanese economy and the global economy.
  3. Those who wish to acquire capabilities and expert knowledge necessary for high-level expert professionals and researchers.
  4. Those who wish to acquire practical capabilities and knowledge in the specialized field necessary for taking responsibility in global business.
  5. Those who wish to acquire language ability, and practical capability and practical knowledge in the special field necessary for working as an interpreter in a global society.
  6. Those who wish to acquire capabilities and expert knowledge necessary for working as a specialist in a public organization inside or outside Japan.

Doctor's Program, Graduate School of Economics

Educational and Research Purposes

The Economics Doctor's Program offered by the Graduate School of Economics aims to further develop the education and research conducted in the master's program and train individuals who can contribute to the development of society and the welfare of mankind with both wide and rich scholarly knowledge and research skills necessary for conducting research activities in their specialized fields of economics independently as scholars or high-level professional skills necessary for specialized jobs.

Diploma Policy (Principle of Degree Conferment)

For the Economics Doctor's Program offered by the Graduate School of Economics, students who have completed the required number of credits and whose submitted theses have been examined and found acceptable for the degree in accordance with the thesis examination criteria are judged to be equipped with the following capabilities and awarded a doctor's degree (Economics).

  1. Capability to study academic research topics in specialized fields.
  2. Capability to widely and deeply recognize the essence of problems in economic society.
  3. Capability to carry out high-level theoretical development and applied analysis corresponding to the level required by the academic circles in one's specialized field.
  4. Capability to create an academic paper reflecting the above three items and present it in academic journals, academic meetings, and so on.
  5. Capability to create a doctor's thesis based on the results of the research activities described in the previous items and present it.
  6. Capability to acquire an expert knowledge of economics at a level required by the academic circles, and have high-level expertise and a wide social perspective as an independent researcher and a member of the community.

Curriculum Policy (Principle of Curriculum Formation and Implementation)

For the Economics Doctor's Program offered by the Graduate School of Economics, the following curriculum policy is set for this curriculum to develop high-level expert professionals or members of the community with both wide and rich scholarly knowledge and research skills necessary for conducting research activities in their specialized fields of economics independently as scholars or high-level professional skills necessary for specialized jobs.

  1. To implement full graduate school education that can respond to various needs of modern society and to support students in their research subject study, the curriculum responding to various needs is formed by providing research guidance courses related to theoretical economics, economic history, and fields of applied economics such as finance, public finance, and international economy, and opening many related lecture courses to deepen such studies.
  2. Under the supervision of the instructing professor, each student is given guidance mainly on the specialized area of the field he or she selects, concentrates on preparing and writing a degree thesis that can be accepted as a creative research project, and completes a doctor's thesis. For guidance on doctor's thesis creation, appropriate guidance is provided as needed, such as reporting carried out multiple times at a thesis interim presentation or workshop and thesis progress reporting.
  3. On occasions such as interim presentations, regarding a thesis, problems are pointed out and guidance and advice are given by personnel other than the instructing professor to secure the objectivity of thesis evaluation and support students in developing the ability to respond to various problems.
  4. An opportunity is given for students to gain experience and improve their ability as educators by working as TAs (teaching assistant).

Admission Policy (Principle of Student Admission)

Based on the Diploma Policy and Curriculum Policy, the Economics Doctor's Program offered by the Graduate School of Literature seeks applicants who have the following academic skills and motivations.

  1. Those who either completed a master's degree program related to economics or its related field or have expert knowledge and capabilities equal to the expert knowledge and capabilities of those who completed the said program and who are highly inquisitive academically and have a strong will to complete research.
  2. Those who have foreign language ability for reading foreign language documents to conduct research (adequate Japanese language skill in the case of international students) and adequate reading comprehension.
  3. Those who aim to become a researcher in the field of economics or a related field.
  4. Those who aim to be engaged in highly-specialized jobs in a global society such as international business, economic cooperation, and economic development.
  5. Those who aim to be engaged in research jobs, highly-specialized jobs, and so on in research organizations or public organizations inside or outside Japan.
