Mission of Education and Research and Basic Policies (Three Policies)

English Studies Master's Program

Educational and Research Purposes

The English Studies Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Foreign Languages aims to develop individuals who will gain a deep scholarly knowledge in the fields of English studies, English education, and language and culture, and have both research capabilities based on a broad perspective and highly-specialized knowledge and skills.

Diploma Policy (Principle of Degree Conferment)

For the English Studies Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Foreign Languages, students who have completed the required number of credits and whose submitted master's theses have been examined and found acceptable for the degree in accordance with the internal rules related to the program are judged to be equipped with the following capabilities and are awarded a master's degree (English Studies).

  1. Capability to acquire a broad and deep knowledge of one or more of the fields of English studies, English education, and language and culture, and develop practical-problem-solving abilities.
  2. Capability to create a thesis on a topic of their own choice in thein specialized field based on wide expert knowledge and skills and the ability to present it.
  3. Capability to acquire expert knowledge and skills for performing work that requires high-level expertise in any of the fields of English studies, English education, and language and culture.

Curriculum Policy (Principle of Curriculum Formation and Implementation)

For the English Studies Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Foreign Languages, to allow students to improve their expert knowledge, skills, and research capabilities in their specialized field and related areas, and acquire skills for performing work that requires expertise, the curriculum is formed according to the following four policy statements.

  1. A curriculum system is organized in such a way that well-balanced supervision can be provided on specialized lecture courses related to English studies, English education, and language and culture, and common courses covering these three fields.
  2. Courses for communication practice such as interpreting and translation are arranged to allow students to acquire high-level expert knowledge and practical English skills. In addition, common courses taught by native speakers of English are arranged by considering the development of "specialists in English" who can respond to globalization and the spread of information technology of society, and others.
  3. With a focus on seminars, a system for research supervision that provides detailed guidance on an individual student basis until thesis completion is established.
  4. The "In-Service Teacher One-Year Plan," which allows students to earn a master's degree in one year, has been established for in-service teachers in such educational institutions as elementary, junior high, and high schools, technical colleges, and universities.

Admission Policy (Principle of Student Admission)

Based on the Diploma Policy and Curriculum Policy, the English Studies Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Foreign Languages seeks applicants who have the following four academic skills and motivations.

  1. Those who intend to acquire high-level expert knowledge and language proficiency covering a wide range based on the basic skills gained during the undergraduate years.
  2. Those who can acquire wide education and think flexibly and creatively in research areas inside and outside Japan.
  3. Those who wish to identify the true nature of a phenomenon, find a solution, and contribute to society through research.
  4. Those who desire to improve themselves and intend to not only become researchers but also actively work globally in such organizations as the United Nations and foreign companies after completing the program.

English Studies Doctor's Program

Educational and Research Purposes

The English Studies Doctor's Program offered by the Graduate School of Foreign Languages aims to develop independent researchers or individuals engaged in high-level expertise-required jobs who can further deepen their expertise based on the results of the research projects conducted in the master's program.

Diploma Policy (Principle of Degree Conferment)

For the English Studies Doctor's Program offered by the Graduate School of Foreign Languages, students who have completed the required number of credits and whose submitted theses have been examined and found acceptable for the degree in accordance with the internal rules related to the program are judged to be equipped with the following capabilities and are awarded a doctor's degree (English Studies).

  1. Capability to acquire and apply a high-level expert knowledge and skills in one or more of the fields of English studies, English education, and language and culture.
  2. Capability to create an academic paper from the research results in one's specialized field, present it at conferences inside and outside Japan, and independently conduct research activities as a researcher.
  3. Capability to acquire expert knowledge and skills necessary for being engaged in high-level expertise-required jobs in any of the fields of English studies, English education, and language and culture.

For the English Studies Doctor's Program offered by the Graduate School of Foreign Languages, to allow students to conduct independent research activities as researchers and acquire knowledge and skills necessary for being engaged in high-level expertise-required jobs, the curriculum is formed according to the following policy.

  1. The curriculum system is organized in such a way that well-balanced supervision can be provided on specialized lecture courses related to English studies, English education, and language and culture, and common courses covering these three fields.
  2. With a focus on seminars, a system for research supervision that provides detailed guidance on an individual student basis until thesis completion is established.

Admission Policy (Principle of Student Admission)

Based on the Diploma Policy and Curriculum Policy, the English Studies Doctor's Program offered by the Graduate School of Foreign Languages seeks applicants who have the following four academic skills and motivations.

  1. Those who intend to study further with the desire for self-improvement in any of the fields of English studies, English education, and language and culture based on the skills gained in the master's program, and intend to not only become researchers but also actively work globally in such organizations as the United Nations and foreign companies after completing the program.
  2. Those who are expected to systematically study and complete a doctor's thesis during the doctor's program years in any of the fields of English studies, English education, and language and culture.
  3. Those who intend to identify the problem and nature of a phenomenon and develop the ability to solve such problems.
