Mission of Education and Research and Basic Policies (Three Policies)

Japanese Literature Master's Program

Educational and Research Purposes

The Japanese Literature Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Literature aims to develop individuals equipped with research capabilities based on a broad perspective and high-level expert vocational skills who can contribute to society.

Diploma Policy (Principle of Degree Conferment)

For the Japanese Literature Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Literature, students who have completed the required number of credits and whose submitted theses have been found acceptable for the degree are judged to be equipped with the following capabilities and awarded a master's degree (Japanese Literature).

  1. Capability to comprehensively understand various types of literature, mainly classical literature and early modern & modern literature with a deep knowledge of Japanese literature acquired.
  2. Capability to appropriately use the language with a knowledge of Japanese for the period between ancient and modern times.
  3. Capability to perform literary criticism and analysis with deep appreciation skills held for classical literature and early modern & modern literature.

Curriculum Policy (Principle of Curriculum Formation and Implementation)

For the Japanese Literature Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Literature, based on the Diploma Policy, the curriculum is formed as follows by organizing a wide range of courses such as Japanese literature courses, Japanese studies courses, and related courses, and achieving their organic linkage over the entire curriculum, aiming to develop individuals who can be engaged in academic research and higher education.

  1. For the master's program, a two-year curriculum is formed, consisting of courses covering fields of Japanese Literature (from ancient to early modern & modern times) and such related courses as Chinese Literature, Chinese Philosophy, Cultural History, Comparative Literature.
  2. The above courses are divided into seminar courses and special study courses as lecture courses. The curriculum is formed with the former placed as courses conducted by research instructors and the latter organically associated with seminar courses and intended for the acquisition of expert knowledge and cultural enrichment.
  3. Research is conducted for literature and literary texts for two years to develop high-level capabilities for thinking, creating academic papers, teaching, and so on while fundamentally reviewing the relationships among language, people, and world (society). In the second year, guidance is given so that students' research projects on their respective themes can yield good results as highly specialized master's theses.

Admission Policy (Principle of Student Admission)

Based on the Diploma Policy and Curriculum Policy, the Japanese Literature Master's Program offered by the Graduate School of Literature seeks applicants who have the following academic skills and motivations.

  1. Those who aim to acquire a higher-level expert knowledge by taking advantage of the basic academic skills cultivated during the undergraduate years.
  2. Those who can acquire research capabilities based on wide education and wide perspective and think flexibly.
  3. Those who are strongly motivated to always study problems in modern society and culture in a wide perspective.

Japanese Literature Doctor's Program

Educational and Research Purposes

The Japanese Literature Doctor's Program offered by the Graduate School of Literature aims to train individuals who can contribute to society by developing full-fledged researchers of Japanese Literature and individuals engaged in high-level expertise-required jobs.

Diploma Policy (Principle of Degree Conferment)

For the Japanese Literature Doctor's Program offered by the Graduate School of Literature, students who have completed the required number of credits and whose submitted theses have been found acceptable for the degree are judged to be equipped with the following capabilities and awarded a doctor's degree (Japanese Literature).

  1. Capability to comprehensively view various types of literature, mainly classical literature and early modern & modern literature with a high-level knowledge of Japanese literature held as an expert professional.
  2. Capability to appropriately use the language with a high-level knowledge of Japanese for the period between ancient and modern times held as an expert professional.
  3. Capability to conduct excellent research as an expert professional with high-level analytical skills in classical literature and early modern & modern literature.

Curriculum Policy (Principle of Curriculum Formation and Implementation)

For the Japanese Literature Doctor's Program offered by the Graduate School of Literature, based on the Diploma Policy, the curriculum is formed as follows by organizing a wide range of courses such as Japanese literature courses, Japanese studies courses, and related courses, and achieving their organic linkage over the entire curriculum, aiming to develop individuals who can be engaged in academic research and higher education.

  1. For the doctor's program, a three-year curriculum is formed, consisting of courses covering fields of Japanese Literature and Japanese linguistics and such related courses as Chinese Literature, Chinese Philosophy, Cultural History, and Comparative Literature, as with the master's program.
  2. Especially, with seminar courses placed as courses conducted by research instructors, the curriculum is formed in such a way that the research projects in the master's program can be further deepened to develop into more specialized and higher-level ones.
  3. For three years, specialized and high-level capabilities for research and teaching are developed, and guidance is given so that students' research projects can yield good results as elaborate, innovative, and unique theses that can be accepted in the academic community.
